2wire.com

Go here to check out the speed of your broadband connection (cable/dsl/T1). Just click on "Test your broadband speed."

amazon.com

One of the most well-known websites on the net for buying any kind of product you can think of. And the great thing about this site is that the users of the products post their reviews after they buy it and use it.

aol instant messenger

You don't have to be a memeber of AOL to use AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM). All you need is this program. So, if you have friends that are on AOL that you would like to chat with, or if you just want to be able to chat with anyone online (they have to have this program, a program like Trillian, or be a member of AOL), then check out this program.

altavista's babel fish translation service

If you want to translate some text into another language, check this site out. Just enter the text that you want translated, select the "from" and "to" languages, and hit "Translate". You can even enter the address of a webpage and have the entire webpage's text translated. Very useful.

cartalk.com

These guys have been around for a while. They know everything there is to know about cars. They also have a forum where people who are really into cars help other people with their car troubles. And, as is the case with most popular forums, the response time is pretty quick.

cookie pal

This is a program that allows you to take back your privacy that is rightfully yours. Cookies are nothing more than text files that have personal info about you. They are created by websites, and are stored on your computer. With this program, you can decide which websites can create cookies and store them on your computer, and which ones can not.

You will need to accept cookies from websites where you will be shopping (shopping carts use cookies), doing a search (example: www.ask.com), or personalizing a webpage (example: my.yahoo.com).

Any sites that deal with ads, obviously, you will want to reject.

In any case, this program is a must have.

NOTE: For more info on what cookies are, go here. To read about the dark side of cookies, go here.

craigslist.org

This is a non-commercial website that lets you post and/or view free listings for a wide variety of things from jobs, to helping people move, to events in the area, to advertising your services, to you name it. It's also broken down into different parts of the country by city.

download.com

Go here to find 1000's of free software programs to download. It will even tell you which ones are the most popular for the type of software that you are looking for. Users can also post their reviews of the software after they download and use it, so you can find out whether or not it is worth downloading.

ebay.com

This is the most popular online auction site on the net. Pretty much anything you can think of, and things you have never thought of, are up there. Many celebs even post some of their items up there and donate the money to charity. Jay Leno, for one, comes to mind. He auctioned off his motorcycle that was signed by many celebs and donated the funds to charity.

epinions.com

If you are about to buy something, go here first and read reviews written by the people who actually use the product on a daily basis...the consumers.

godaddy.com

If you are up for buying a domain (e.g. www.whatever.com), then this is the place I recommend. This is where I buy all of my domains. They only charge $8.95 per year.
