Infection from spyware, malware, and viruses has to be the most common problem people have with their computers. Some think that there computer is slower because it is getting old. This is a common thought, however it is a myth. If the hardware is in great shape, then you can always get your computer back to the speed that it had when you first bought it simply by removing the spyware and viruses that have infected it.
The main ways you get spyware, malware, and/or viruses are by visiting adult websites, casino websites, downloading software, games, or screen savers from websites that are not well known, or by opening email from people you don't know (however, in some cases, it may even look like it did come from someone you know). So, I would highly suggest you avoid those activites.
A great way to avoid all of this from happening, as we can't always control what a friend or family member does on our computer, is to sign up for a monthly spyware/malware/virus maintenance program. This will keep your computer clean and up-to-date with the latest spyware, malware, and viruses so it can be protected. Having an infected computer can cause some major downtime in your productivity and/or business, which can cost a great deal of money. So it is always smart to have your computer cleaned each month.
