Want to hide some files and/or folders on your computer?

December 2, 2005 by Ian Brown No Comments

That’s easy. Just make the file and/or folder “HIDDEN.” If you make a folder hidden, you will also be making any and all files in that folder hidden. When a file or folder is hidden, you can not see it. It just disappears from your screen. You can do this with any kind of file.

Here’s how:

1. RIGHT-click on the file or folder and go to PROPERTIES
2. Check the box next to HIDDEN on the bottom of the window that just popped up
3. Click OK
4. Done!
(it will only be hidden if you have the option in the VIEW portion of Folder Options that deals with hidden files/folders set to “DO NOT SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS; see steps 5-7 to see how to change this setting)
5. To view it again, double-click on MY COMPUTER and go to TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS
6. Click on the VIEW tab
7. Click the circle next to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
8. Click OK
9. When done viewing, repeat steps 3 & 4, but this time, click the circle next to DO NOT SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

Quick and easy.

Businesses that offer Free Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi = wireless access to the Internet)

October 8, 2004 by Ian Brown No Comments

Just found this site. It has lists of businesses for each state that offer free Wi-Fi (wireless access to the Internet):

www.wififreespot.com

So, if you have a laptop that has a wireless network adapter, or your laptop has one built in, then you can just take your laptop to the location and have access to the Net for free! You can even just sit in the parking lot or be near the location and use it for most of the locations. Of course, your mileage will vary depending on the strength of the signal and the type of equipment that you have.

Don’t know what to do with your old PC?

September 23, 2004 by Ian Brown No Comments

Do you have an old PC that you don’t know what to do with?

Well, in an article by cnet.com, they suggest the following:

  1. Use it to protect your home network
  2. Turn it into a Linux learning lab [Linux is an alternative Operating System to Windows)
  3. Donate or recycle it

The article even includes a video tutorial which will show you how to do Suggestion #1.

I’d like to add an option:

Rebuild It

Many times, rebuilding a computer can be much less expensive than buying a new PC. And you don’t have to do it all at once, either. You can do it piece by piece like many of my clients have done. And just so you know, you can continue to use it in between the upgrades.

Source of article: Thanks, Georgia
