Windows XP Service Pack 2 is out!

by Ian Brown 1 Comment

Just wanted to let everyone know that a major upgrade to Windows XP, SP2, is out.

Download it from here:

Windows Service Pack 2

UPDATE: I do not suggest that you install this just yet. Seems like Bill jumped the gun on this one. I installed it on my laptop, and it slowed it down a bit. Even though it is now available via Windows Update, hold off a bit. Check back here for updates.

Problem printing on a printer connected to another PC on a home network?

by Ian Brown No Comments

If you’re having problems printing on a printer that is connected to another PC on a home netork, there are three things that you can try:

  1. If you have just added the PC that is connected to the printer, try running the Netork Setup Wizard on all of the other machines on the network to make sure that they are able to see the other PC. Make sure you reboot all PC’s after you run the wizard on each PC.
  2. If a firewall is running, try disabling it, or setting it to allow the sharing of files and printers (Sygate is a great firewall for this type of setup). If you do not have a third-party firewall running, you may have the native Windows XP firewall running. Disable it if need be.
  3. If you can see the PC that the printer is connected to in My Network Places, then double-click on that PC and then double-click on the printer to which you are trying to print.

Protect your email from viruses

July 21, 2004 by Ian Brown No Comments

You must have either two hard drives or one hard drive with two partitions to do this.

Outlook Express Users

There is a way to set up your system so if you lose your C drive to a virus, all of your email will still be entact! It’s very easy to set up. Simply do the following:

  1. Create a new folder on your Data drive (most likely your D drive); Data drive meaning the drive where all of you files, music, etc. are
  2. To create a new folder on your Data drive: double-click on My Computer => double-click on your Data drive => RIGHT-click anywhere on the white part of that window (make sure you don’t highlight another folder) => Select NEW>FOLDER
  3. Name the new folder “Outlook Express Email” or just “Email”, whichever you prefer
  4. Open up Outlook Express
  5. Go to the TOOLS menu at the top of the program and select OPTIONS
  6. Click on the MAINTENANCE tab at the top of the window that pops up
  7. Click on the STORE FOLDER button
  8. Click the CHANGE button
  9. Select the folder named “Outlook Express Email” or “Email”, or whatever you decided to name the folder on your Data drive that you just created
  10. Click OK, then OK again, then OK again (you will be closing three different windows by doing this)
  11. It should show you that it is moving the email to its new location
  12. Once it finishes, you are DONE!
