If you’re getting the following error message…

“Not Enough Storage: This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available. You can manage your storage in Settings.”

…this may be a legitimate error for you, and if that’s the case, then the answer for you is to either copy of some the data from your iOS device to your computer and delete the data you just copied from your iOS device so there is less to backup to iCloud, OR you can simply buy more iCloud storage.

And keep in mind that if you are backing up more than one device to the iCloud, that each backup of each device will count as additional space being taken up, even if they are the same files on each device.

However, if your situation is similar to the one that I encountered where you aren’t backing up much data in the first place, and then all of a sudden you don’t have enough space to backup your device via iCloud, this fix is for you.

Here is how to fix it:

Go to Settings>General>Usage>under “iCloud”, select Manage Storage>select your iOS device

Here is the screen that you’ll get:

[ Yes, it says, "Martha Stewart" and no, it is not my iPhone. ;p ]

It will tell you the date of the lastest backup, as well as its size. Below that, under “Backup Options”, it will tell you the “Next Backup Size”, which tells you how large the next backup will be. And below that, it will tell you the items that are taking up the most space in order of size, from most to least.

The On/Off switch next to each item listed is turning on and off the backing up of the data for that section or app. So if there is data that you don’t care about backing up, just switch the On/Off switch next to it to “Off”, and if that fixes your storage issue (frees up enough space), then you are good to go.

In this case, the next backup was going to be 5.3GB (this is not pictured above, because I fixed the issue before I decided to blog about it), however the most recent one was only 3.1GB.

On top of that, Apple only gives you 5GB free in your iCloud account. Any more storage space, and you’ll need to pay. Since both the iPhone and iPad were being backed up in this case, something needed to be done.

So I looked under the “Next Backup Size” to see what was taking up the most space, and it was the Camera Roll, which is the album in the Photos app that has all of the photos that you take with your iPhone, the screenshots that you take of the phone’s screen, and the videos that you take with the phone.

I then went to the Camera Roll album to take a look at what was taking up so much space so soon after the last backup, and I noticed that there was ONE video file that was 1hr 15 min long that was taking up 2.2GB of space!

Apparently, what happened was kind of like a pocket dial, where it started recording video without anyone intentionally touching it. The camera button was pressed accidentally while it was being put in a pocket.

The reason it started recording video instead of just taking a picture was that the last time the camera was used, video was taken. That setting will stay the same for the next use of the camera until you change it.

So, I just deleted the big ass video of nothingness and all was well again.

The reason this was able to happen is that with iOS 5, you can now go directly into the camera with the swipe of the screen (starting at the camera icon) without having to unlock the screen. So this is one of the downsides to that feature. However, I’ll deal with it, because it’s worth being able to catch those fleeting Kodak moments when they occur!

A client friend of mine sent me a link to the streaming of Apple’s Remembering Steve event, so I took the time to watch it. It was quite touching at times. I was also inspired by the comments that were made about him by people who knew him best.

It was great to see such a huge turnout at the event. People really loved him, and for good reason. He made this world a better place by being here, and I, for one, am very grateful for him having passed this way. I learned a lot from him business wise, and I am also quite the Apple fanboy, although I don’t wear it on my sleeve.

I knew the very first time I laid my eyes on a Mac that it would be hugely successful. I even wrote down in my journal to make sure I bought Macs for my business. It was one of those “Blink” moments, you know? If you’re not sure what I am referring to, read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Great book, as well as his other books, Outliers and The Tipping Point. If you don’t want to wait until you get the book to find out what I’m talking about, then watch this video.

The commemorative speeches were great. In fact, I liked one speech so much that I transcribed it and posted it below. Not only is it clever and witty, but it also gives you a peak into a side of Steve that we never saw much, as he was a very private guy.

Here are some of the things they had to say about Steve:

Steve’s philosophy on life: “The joy of life is in the journey.”

“Steve never followed the hurd.”

“He always did what was right, not what was easy.”

“He valued beauty in everything.”

“He pushed himself and those around him incredibly hard to achieve more.”

“One more thing he leaves us. He leaves us with each other.”

“Without him, Apple would have died in the late nineties.”

“He thought about Apple until his last day.”

“He saw Disney paralyzed after Walt died, because they all asked what Walt would do. So he advised those at Apple to never ask what he would do. He told them to just do what’s right.”

The famous ad, “Here’s to the Crazy Ones” was meant more for the employees and for the company as a whole than for the customers. Steve crafted every word of this ad. He didn’t want the ad to be about him. He wanted it to be about Apple. So he didn’t run the ad with his voiceover.

Al Gore also noted this interesting study that I paraphrased from his speech at the event…

Steve Jobs had the uncanny ability to create products of technology that people actually love. A neuroscientist conducted a study to see whether or not the iPhone and the iPad were addictive. So he studied the parts of the brain that were fired off when people used them. After numerous tests and focus groups, he came to the conclusion that the parts of the brain that were fired off while using the iPhone and the iPad were not that of addiction, but that of love.

And the Steve Jobs quote that Al Gore ended his commemorating speech with was the following:

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” – Steve Jobs

Al Gore’s main theme in his speech was love. Interesting. I guess that tends to be one’s focus as one gets older. Either that or he really loves Steve Jobs. But then again, who doesn’t?

As stated above, Steve’s philosophy on life drove him. It was what made Apple Apple, and it’s also how Steve was able to make one of the most incredible corporate turnarounds in corporate history.

One quote that Steve heard when he was young came to be the driving force of his ambition.

Steve explains it this way…

“When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: ‘If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.’ It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

And lastly, Jony (pronounced “Johnny”) Ive, Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc., gave a brilliant speech commemorating Steve Jobs at the “Celebrating Steve” event. It was so good, that I decided to transcribe it for you and post it below. I hope you enjoy it.

And Steve, wherever you are, THANK YOU for all that you did while you were here. Because of you, my mother can read with ease…because of you, my father no longer has to have me fix the computer every time I visit…and because of you, my life has changed forever from the lessons you taught me both about business, and about life. Transcription of Jony Ive’s Speech Commemorating Steve Jobs

It never ceases to amaze me how intuitive Apple makes their operating systems, including that of the iPad. We were just at my uncle’s this weekend, and a close friend of the family had his two year old with him. His parents are very much Apple fans, so of course they have an iPad.

Consequently, Hiro, the very cool and hip two year old, has working knowledge of the iPad. His favorite app? Angry Birds? Nope. Need for Speed? Not old enough. Elmo’s ABCs? Not a chance. No, the app of choice for this clever toddler is none other than Netflix. I didn’t derive any conclusion from that (I’m not one to judge a two year old), but I found that to be pretty interesting.

Anyway, we recently gave my mother the new iPad for her birthday, and so we had that with us. First I took some pictures, and then a movie with the iPad of Hiro and his older brother horsing around. They were wrestling on the floor. And when they found out that I was recording it, they really put on a show! Clearly they LOVE the attention.

So after they finished their “match”, they crawled up to the couch where I was recording them from and asked to see it. I showed it to them. Hiro LOVED watching himself wrestle with his brother and make noises that you would think would be coming from a cat in pain.

In fact, he loved it so much that he asked if he could put the iPad on his lap so he could watch it again. I obliged, of course. He then proceeded to play that 20 second clip over and over and over again, laughing more hysterically with each subsequent viewing.

But like all children, his attention span waned, and he wanted to move on. So he reached out with his tiny hand with his figures spread out, put all five fingers on the iPad screen, and brought his fingers together so they touched. What happened? The iPhoto app closed, of course!

I know that it seems obvious now, but I would have never thought of that as a way to close an app being a tech guy. However children, especially at that age, just do things intuitively. They use their sixth sense more in a day than we adults do in a month, and it certainly seems to work well for them.

This is also a perfect example of the brilliance of Apple. They make their computers think the way we humans think (no matter how old), instead of having to teach us humans how their computers think (PC, are you reading this? ;p ).

There’s a quote by Steve Jobs that encompasses the mindset Apple has when they design their products:

“They’re not stupid for not knowing how to use our products. We’re stupid if they don’t know how to use our products.”

So if you want to get better at using the iPad, tap deeper into your intuition and think more like a two year old.

My sister just had an issue with her white Macbook (2008) where first it was saying “Replace Battery Soon,” and then it was saying “Replace Battery Now.”

Soon after it said to replace it now, it said that it was going to take 20 hours to recharge and was STUCK on 20 hours (the battery was no longer charging). When this happened, she tried unplugging the charger from her Macbook to see what happened, and it would just turn off right way (the screen would go black, all the lights would go out), as if the battery were dead.

This didn’t really make much sense, because she had just gotten a new battery a little over a year ago, and the program iStat Pro ( great FREE widget for your Mac’s Dashboard) said that the battery’s health was 98%.

So after trying different things, she decided to turn it ALL THE WAY OFF, and THEN charge it fully. This is what fixed it for her. You actually should do that EVERY TIME you drain the battery fully, which you should do ONCE A MONTH to keep your battery healthy.

Just in case you’re wondering, Apple says that you can get 400 cycles out of a battery, but that seems to be conservative, as her battery has completed 379 cycles and iStat Pro says its health is 97%, and iStat Pro says my battery has completed 430 cycles with a health percentage of 88% (see image below).

On top of that, her previous battery had completed 530 cycles before it went bad, so it seems as though both of our batteries have plenty of life left, although I do plan on buying a new Macbook Pro soon.

What didn’t help was she was charging her Macbook fully, unplugging the charger from it, and using it until the battery died, charging it back up again, using it until it died, etc. She never kept it plugged in after the battery was fully charged, which means she was quickly using up her “400″ cycles, or however many is the accurate number of cycles that a Macbook battery will last. So it’s a good thing that this happened. Otherwise she was on track to use up her battery life quicker than normal.

To find out how many cycles your battery has used, download the widget, iStat Pro (it’s FREE), and install it. Then go into your Dashboard (the icon in the bottom left of your screen next to Finder), wait around 10 seconds of it to read your computer, and then it will give you all of the vital stats of your Macbook (check out the image above to see a screenshot).

So the two things we learned here are the following:

1. If your Macbook battery is not charging, then turn your Macbook ALL THE WAY OFF and then CHARGE IT ALL THE WAY UP. After it is fully charged, and the light on the charger (the part that is plugged in to your Macbook) is GREEN indicating that it is fully charged, then start up your Macbook, wait until it is fully booted, and then try unplugging the charger from the Macbook and see if that fixes your battery issue. Of course “your mileage may vary”, meaning this may not work for your situation, but it worked for my sister.

2. EVERY MONTH, you need to unplug the charger from your Macbook and use it until the battery dies. Then, when the battery dies, or right before it dies, TURN YOUR MACBOOK ALL THE WAY OFF and charge it until the charger light turns green, indicating that the battery is fully charged.

Since the jailbreak for iOS 5 is still tethered, I wanted to find out if my iPhone 3GS had the old bootrom version or the new one. The old version will allow you to have an untethered jailbreak, which means you will NOT have to hook up your iPhone to your computer to keep the jailbreak every time you restart your iPhone, you turn it off, or it dies.

Watch the video below to see how to do it. And for those of you who would like the written instructions, I put them below the video.

Instructions

1. Connect your iPhone to your computer
2. Turn iPhone off
3. Start iTunes
4. Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so
5. Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device
6. iTunes will now recognize your iPhone

Note: Your iPhone screen at this time should be black (black in color), if not, then you are most likely in Recovery Mode, not DFU mode.

Here’s a visual for you that shows the difference between “Recovery Mode” and “DFU Mode”:



7. Click on the background image of your desktop (not an icon) OR click on “Finder” at the bottom of your screen in the dock, all the way to the left
8. Click on “Go” at the top of your screen in the menu bar and select “Utilities”
9. Double-click on “System Profiler”
10. Click on USB on the left
11. On the right, you should see “Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode).” Click on it.
12. After you click on it, a new section should appear below it.
13. You should see “Serial Number.” Right below the serial number, you should see [iBoot-359.3] or [iBoot-359.32]. The second one is the new bootrom. The first one is the old one.



14. Done!

If you have the old bootrom, count yourself LUCKY! You can go and jailbreak/unlock your iPhone and it will be an untethered jailbreak, which means once you jailbreak it, it’s jailbroken. You will NOT need to hook up your iPhone to your computer every time your iPhone restarts or dies, which is what everyone else has to do as of now, until the iPhone Dev Team produces an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

I love Facebook, but one thing that I don’t care for is that they automatically activate their new features in our profiles instead of telling us about it, and asking us if we want the new idea implemented into our profile.

So when Facebook adds a new feature, and we don’t like it, we have to go through the hassle of finding the new setting for the new feature, and then change it back to the way it was. But I suppose that is a small price to pay for a website that allows us to easily communicate and share things with people from all over the world in seconds…for free.

One of the relatively new features Facebook implemented is including your current location in your status update. I don’t know about you, but I’m not one to want everyone to know where I am at any given moment, and plenty of my friends are the same way.

In fact, it was one of my friends that posted a status update about this very issue. So I found out how to do it, told her, and then figured that there are plenty of other people who would like to know the same thing, which is why I am here right now, sharing this info with you.

So let’s get to it…

Here’s what your status update box looks like now if it still has the location in it. I’ve circled my location in red.

To get rid of the location in your status, do this:

1. Start typing a new status update
2. When you see your location being displayed at the bottom of the status box, hover over the city with your cursor and look for the “X” to the right of the city



3. Click on that “X” and your status updates will no longer have the location added to them.
4. You may have to click on the “Places” icon. It looks kind of like a hot air balloon.

And when you’re done, it should look like this:

That’s it. Pretty painless. So now you can continue to post Facebook status updates with your current location and destination remaining unknown.

For you unlockers and jailbreakers, today the Dev Team has just released a version of UltraSnow that is compatible with iOS 5! So you can now unlock iOS 5 and use it with any provider. Check out the new features in iOS 5 here.

Just know that no new basebands are supported. The update only adds support for iOS 5. The iPhone 3G and 3GS basebands supported are 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. The baseband supported for the iPhone 4 is 01.59.00.

Also know that the jailbreak is only a tethered jailbreak, except for those of you who have the 3GS that has the old bootrom. So that means, if your phone powers down, you’ll need to connect your phone to your computer when you boot back up.

I would also suggest saving your SHSH blobs before doing this using this tutorial:

Here is some more important info from the iPhone Dev Team Blog:

We’ve updated ultrasn0w to be compatible with iOS5, which came out a few days ago. While ultrasn0w 1.2.4 (available now in Cydia) doesn’t add support for any new basebands, the update is required for any ultrasn0w unlockers trying out iOS5 (it remains backwards compatible though, so you should be able to use it no matter what firmware you have).

Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).

Also, some iPhone3GS users with the 06.15 baseband may have tried to install iOS5 using a stock IPSW (even though you should never ever try to use a stock IPSW if you’re an ultrasn0w unlocker). If you did try this, your baseband is probably in an inconsistent state, and you’ll need to reflash the 06.15 baseband again (using redsn0w). Be very careful if you use redsn0w to reflash the iPad baseband – don’t interrupt the process! And please avoid using stock IPSWs in the future Unlockers should never go near stock IPSWs.

So if you qualify, and you don’t mind having a tethered jailbreak, then here are the three things that you want to do:

1. Upgrade to iOS 5 without upgrading your baseband

2. Jailbreak your iPhone

Again, this is a tethered jailbreak; the Dev team will be releasing an untethered jailbreak very soon, and I will post it on my blog when they do.

3. Unlock your iPhone (if need be)

I may or may not do this tethered jailbreak. It depends how much time I have. But once they release an untethered jailbreak, then I will definitely be upgrading to iOS 5, and when I do, I’ll record the process on video and post it.

And when they release an untethered jailbreak and unlock for the iPhone 4S, I will buy the iPhone 4S, record the jailbreaking and unlocking of it, and post that as well.

A client friend of mine just sent me an email telling me about a killer free offer that a very well known and widely used online storage service is offering.

Step 1

Bada bing! You now have a 50GB Lifetime online storage account with Box that you can use with your iOS device.

You can either upload your data from your iOS device or via your computer by going to box.net, logging into your account with the email address and password that you just used to register, and then clicking on Upload.
