Does Your Computer Freeze or Does Windows Update Not Work After a Fresh Install of Windows XP?

If this happens to you, try resetting the CMOS. The way to do that is the following:

01. Make sure your computer is off and unplug the power cord from the tower
02. Open the tower of the computer to get access to the motherboard
03. Find the CMOS battery which is a round battery a little bigger than the size of a US 5 cent coin
04. Note which part of the battery is facing up so you can put it back the right way, and then take out the CMOS battery with a little help from a screw driver
05. Leave it out for 5 minutes or more
06. Put the battery back in the way it was when you took it out
07. Put the cover back on the tower
08. Plug the power cord back into the back of the tower
09. Boot up your computer; you may have to hit F1 to continue
10. Reset the date and time to the correct date and time
11. Perform a Windows Update
12. Done!

Losing space on your C drive? Try uninstalling Windows Desktop Search.

I was losing space on the c drive of my laptop, and found that over 2 gigs was being taken up by Windows Desktop Search, and as far as I know, it keeps accumulating over time, as it keeps indexing. No other program needs Windows Desktop Search to run, so there are no worries about uninstalling it.

I removed it and got back over 2.7GB of space!

To remove it, do this (in Windows XP):

1. START>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
2. Make sure you check the box at the top of the window for “Show Updates”
3. Find Windows Desktop Search, click on it, then click the “Remove” button (remove the most recent updates to this program first if there is more than one instance of this program listed; I only had one instance listed)
4. It may bring up a box listing all of the programs that were installed after Windows Desktop Search. Click Ignore. No programs are dependent on Windows Desktop Search to run.
5. It will ask to restart.
6. Done!

Hold off on installing Windows XP Service Pack 2

I do not suggest that you install the Service Pack 2 update to Windows XP just yet. Seems like Bill jumped the gun on this one. I installed it on my laptop, and it slowed it down a bit. Even though it is now available via Windows Update, hold off a bit. Check back here for updates.

UPDATE: Some have reported success with SP2. So, you’ll just have to download and install it and see how things go. If it won’t work for you, just go to START>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS>and remove Windows SP 2 (a.k.a. Windows Service Pack 2).
