The old version will allow you to have an untethered jailbreak, which means you will NOT have to hook up your iPhone to your computer to keep the jailbreak every time you restart your iPhone, you turn it off, or it dies.

Watch the video below to see how to do it. And for those of you who would like the written instructions, I put them below the video.

Enjoy!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Instructions

Connect your iPhone to your computer

Turn iPhone off

Start iTunes

Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so

Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device

iTunes will now recognize your iPhone

Note: Your iPhone screen at this time should be black (black in color), if not, then you are most likely in Recovery Mode, not DFU mode.

Here’s a visual for you that shows the difference between “Recovery Mode” and “DFU Mode”:

Click on the background image of your desktop (not an icon) OR click on “Finder” at the bottom of your screen in the dock, all the way to the left

Click on “Go” at the top of your screen in the menu bar and select “Utilities”

Double-click on “System Profiler”

Click on USB on the left

On the right, you should see “Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode).” Click on it.

After you click on it, a new section should appear below it.

You should see “Serial Number.” Right below the serial number, you should see [iBoot-359.3] or [iBoot-359.32]. The second one is the new bootrom. The first one is the old one.

Done!

If you have the old bootrom, count yourself LUCKY! You can go and jailbreak/unlock your iPhone and it will be an untethered jailbreak, which means once you jailbreak it, it’s jailbroken. You will NOT need to hook up your iPhone to your computer every time your iPhone restarts or dies, which is what everyone else has to do as of now, until the iPhone Dev Team produces an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

Just know that no new basebands are supported. The update only adds support for iOS 5. The iPhone 3G and 3GS basebands supported are 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. The baseband supported for the iPhone 4 is 01.59.00.

Also know that the jailbreak is only a tethered jailbreak, except for those of you who have the 3GS that has the old bootrom. So that means, if your phone powers down, you’ll need to connect your phone to your computer when you boot back up.

I would also suggest saving your SHSH blobs before doing this using this tutorial:

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=16988

Here is some more important info from the iPhone Dev Team Blog:

We’ve updated ultrasn0w to be compatible with iOS5, which came out a few days ago. While ultrasn0w 1.2.4 (available now in Cydia) doesn’t add support for any new basebands, the update is required for any ultrasn0w unlockers trying out iOS5 (it remains backwards compatible though, so you should be able to use it no matter what firmware you have).

Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).

Also, some iPhone3GS users with the 06.15 baseband may have tried to install iOS5 using a stock IPSW (even though you should never ever try to use a stock IPSW if you’re an ultrasn0w unlocker). If you did try this, your baseband is probably in an inconsistent state, and you’ll need to reflash the 06.15 baseband again (using redsn0w). Be very careful if you use redsn0w to reflash the iPad baseband – don’t interrupt the process! And please avoid using stock IPSWs in the future Unlockers should never go near stock IPSWs.

So if you qualify, and you don’t mind having a tethered jailbreak, then here are the three things that you want to do:

1. Upgrade to iOS 5 without upgrading your baseband

Tutorial: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=17344

2. Jailbreak your iPhone

Again, this is a tethered jailbreak; the Dev team will be releasing an untethered jailbreak very soon, and I will post it on my blog when they do.

Tutorial: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=17342

3. Unlock your iPhone (if need be)

Tutorial: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

I may or may not do this tethered jailbreak. It depends how much time I have. But once they release an untethered jailbreak, then I will definitely be upgrading to iOS 5, and when I do, I’ll record the process on video and post it.

And when they release an untethered jailbreak and unlock for the iPhone 4S, I will buy the iPhone 4S, record the jailbreaking and unlocking of it, and post that as well.

Enjoy iOS 5 and let me know what you think of it!

Box.net is an online storage service that, according to Box, is used by 73% of the Fortune 500 companies. Impressive.

Well, they just launched their new iPhone app and they are offering you a 50GB Lifetime account if you sign up before December 2, 2011. Pretty sweet, huh?

All you have to do is download the app to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, sign up for a free account, and you automatically get upgraded to a 50GB account for free.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1

Open the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

Step 2

Click on the “Search” icon on the bottom of the screen, type “box.net” (no quotes) in the search field up top, and click on “box.net” in the search results.

Step 3

Click on the Box.net app

Step 4

Click on the green install button in the upper right (it’ grayed out in the pic below because I already installed it)

Step 5

Launch the application

Step 6

Enter your email address, password, confirm your password, and click “Register”

Step 7

Bada bing! You now have a 50GB Lifetime online storage account with Box that you can use with your iOS device.

You can either upload your data from your iOS device or via your computer by going to box.net, logging into your account with the email address and password that you just used to register, and then clicking on Upload.

Here’s a tour of the service:

And here is the co-founder and some employees talking about Box’s simple, mobile, and open approach to online storage.

If you have an iPhone 3GS or 4, or a 3rd or 4th generation iPod, or either of the iPads, hook it up to your computer, open iTunes, click on your iOS device on the left under “Devices’, click update, and get rocking with the new iOS!

This is a really big update and has a plethora of new features, most notably an all new drop down notification system, iCloud (online storage and wireless syncing), iMessage (FREE text messaging and multi-media messaging among other iOS 5 users), lock screen access to your camera (can take pics immediately even if your screen is locked), major Twitter integration, Find My Friends (allows you to share you location with your friends, even just temporarily so they can give you directions, etc.), and an upgraded Safari browser, among others.

If you do not have at least iTunes 10.5, then you will need to do a software update to update iTunes first (Apple menu in upper left corner of your screen > Software Update).

Also being released today is an update to Mac OS X Lion, version 10.7.2, which includes support for iCloud.

To get the update, simply go to your Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen and select Software Update. It will scan your computer and see what you need, and then list all of the updates. Just click the Update button and you’ll be good to go! Make sure you repair your disk permissions after you install the updates to keep you Mac running optimally.

So if you’re an Apple fan and have the devices to prove it, then go get downloading and enjoy!

Ok, so 2 days ago, a friend of mine had her iPhone 4 stolen. She was in a Starbucks, got up from her table to leave, threw out her empty coffee cup, walked outside about 20 feet, and quickly realized that she forgot her iPhone. She looked in through the window at the table where she was just sitting and saw that her iPhone was already gone! Crazy.

I helped her look for it EVERYWHERE! In the trash, under all of the tables, in the corner, in the guy’s bag who had sat down at the same table where she was sitting…nada!

So we went through the options:

Did she subscribe to MobileMe? –> Nope!

Had she backed up her iPhone via iTunes? –> ‘Fraid not! Never did. Not even once.

Did she have insurance on her iPhone? –> Ummm…nope!

Unfortunately, she had not prepared for such a situation because she lives and hangs out in a really nice area of town. But, alas…this is LA! However, in her defense, one of the workers at that Starbucks who has worked there for a while said something gets stolen from a customer there maybe once or twice a year. So it just so happened that she was one of those two! Not cool.

But because that unfortunate incident happened, you guys benefit, because I’m going to hook you up with some info that will help you protect your iPhone (and your other iOS devices), or at the very least, protect your data, in case this happens, which hopefully it won’t!

Back it up!

First off, you MUST MUST MUST backup your phone. It’s super easy. All you have to do is hook up your iPhone to your computer via USB. Use the same cord you use to charge it, but take off the adapter that allows it to plug into the wall so you can plug that end into the USB port of your computer.

Then, select the music, movies, etc. that you want on your iPhone by clicking on the corresponding tabs at the top of iTunes, and putting check marks in the boxes next to the items that you want to put on your iPhone. Then click APPLY in the bottom right corner of iTunes. Let it do its thing (sync/copy the files), and then you’re done! Every time it syncs, it will backup your iPhone’s data, unless you tell it not to in the Preferences of iTunes.

Here, watch this for a visual:

Click here to view the embedded video.

OK. Cool. So now you have all of the data on your iPhone backed up, including SMS, photos, call history, music, email…everything. Nice. That way, if you don’t happen to get your iPhone back because the guy that took it is just too large for you to handle, then you can at least get another iPhone, sync it to your computer, put all of your data that was on your old iPhone onto the new one, and get your life back. However, you can always go to the cops and have them take on the large one who took your phone.

How to Use “Find My iPhone”

After you back up your iPhone, you want to register for the “Find My iPhone” service.

But first, before we do that, watch this video so you have a visual of how “Find My iPhone” works:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Isn’t that a cool service? And the best part? If you have an iPhone 4, an iPad, or a 4th generation iPod Touch, it’s FREE! Apple is so cool to us customers.

So, let’s get your iPhone registered right now.

First, you’ll need to download and install the “Find My iPhone” app, if you haven’t already.

To do this, just click on the App Store app on your iPhone, click on the “Search” tab at the bottom of the screen, and then type in “Find My iPhone” (no quotes) in the search field at the top of the screen. The icon for it should pop up (it’s the same one as the green circle that’s in the main image for this blog post). Just click on it to go to the page for that app, and then click “Install”.

Once you have “Find My iPhone” installed on your iPhone, follow the steps below.

Step 1:

Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 4.2. The way to check is go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>ABOUT>and look at the number next to VERSION. If you have that version or higher, great. Let’s keep going.

If you don’t, then update your iPhone OS simply by connecting your iPhone to your Mac or PC and follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes (open iTunes if it doesn’t open automatically when you connect your iPhone to your computer).

If you’re creating a free account for the first time, you’ll need an iPhone 4.

Step 2:

Go to SETTINGS>MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS

Step 3:

Click on ADD ACCOUNT>MOBILEME

Step 4

Enter your Apple ID and Password.

If you already have an account with the iTunes store, or you’ve bought something from Apple’s online store, then you already have an Apple ID.

If you don’t have one, then click “Create Apple ID” at the bottom of the screen and follow the prompts.

If you’re a MobileMe subscriber already, then simply enter your .me or .mac email address and password.

Step 5

Verify your account.

If it says “Not Verified” under your MobileMe account, go to your email inbox and look for a message from Apple that was just sent to you. Open the email, click the Verify Now link, and sign in with your new Apple ID that you just created.

If you don’t see an email from Apple in your inbox, then click on your MobileMe account, and click “Resend Verification Email.”

Step 6

Go back to the MobileMe screen and turn on “Find My iPhone.” When the “Find My iPhone” message pops up, click ALLOW.

Step 7

Give it a shot! Open up the “Find My iPhone” app that you download and log in. You should be able to see your phone listed, and also be able to locate it. You can also use it to locate other phones that are registered with this service. All you have to do is log in with their Apple ID with the app.

You can also log into www.me.com with your Apple ID, instead of using the app, and do the same thing.

UPDATE: Here’s How to Get it to Work on an iPhone 3G or 3GS

A reader wrote in and asked it this worked on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. So I did some research, and according this post on Lifehacker.com, it does!

You just need to use a qualifying iOS device, meaning a 2010 or later iOS device, to set it up. Use a friend’s if you don’t happen to have one, because you can delete their device from your account after you set up your device on the service.

Simply follow the steps above with either your or a friend’s 2010 iOS device using YOUR Apple ID. Once the newer iOS device is registered with your Apple ID, follow the same steps above with your iPhone 3G or 3GS, also using your Apple ID.

Test the locating of your device with the service by using the app on the newer iOS device (or on any other iOS device with the free Find My iPhone app, which they can download from the app store if they don’t have it), or by logging into www.me.com.

After you confirm that the 3G or 3GS works, if the newer iOS device is not yours or you don’t want it attached to your Apple ID, on the newer iOS device, delete your MobileMe account (SETTINGS > MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS > MobileMe account > Delete Account). If you do want to keep it attached, just leave it alone.

After that, you should be good to go!

Update: I just tested it and this does work.

Things You Need to Know

Your iOS device needs to be ON in order for you to be able to locate it, so KEEP YOUR BATTERY CHARGED (that was another factor against my friend in the story above…the phone had only 7% on it, so when we tried to call it, it went to straight to voicemail, which means it was off)

If you’re trying to locate an iPod Touch or iPad, since the service cannot use cell triangulation, your iOS device will need to be connected to a wifi network in order for it to be found, because the service locates the device by locating the router that is broadcasting the wireless signal that your iOS device is currently on

You can prompt your iOS device to pop up a message that tells people your device is lost, and you would appreciate it if they returned it. Your message will pop up with a loud sound that will sound, even if the sound is turned off. And no one will be able to turn the sound off.

If you don’t think you’re going to be able to retrieve it, you can remotely wipe your iPhone of all of your data just by logging into www.me.com and selecting that service. Apple’s got your back!

TROUBLESHOOTING: This service will not work for you if…

iPhone is not on or currently not connected to a data network (Edge, 3G or Wi-Fi)

iPad or iPod Touch is currently off or not connected to a Wi-Fi network

“Push” is not enabled in (SETTINGS > MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS > FETCH DATA)

You tried to initiate a remote wipe of the phone (wiping all of the data remotely; you would only do this if you lost it or if it were stolen, and you did not think you would ever get it back)

You have multiple MobileMe accounts on the iPhone

The date isn’t right on your iPhone

The device’s iOS version is not up to date (or at least iOS 4.2; SETTINGS>GENERAL>ABOUT>VERSION)

Your MobileMe account is not configured correctly in your iOS device (try deleting it and adding it again; see steps on how to do this above)

The “Find My iPhone” service is not on (SETTINGS > MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS > Your MobileMe Account > Make sure “Find My iPhone” is ON)

Your iPhone is in and out of service (doesn’t have a strong signal)

Location Services is not enabled (SETTINGS > GENERAL)

You’re living in a country where Apple does not offer this service

If it says, “Location not available,” (it might even say “Message pending” underneath “Location not available”) and you’ve gone through and tried all of the above troubleshooting items, then try deleting the MobileMe account (SETTINGS > MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS > MobileMe account > Delete Account), and then add it back in, BUT…TURN OFF “Find My iPhone” BEFORE you save it. AFTER you save the new account, THEN go back in and TURN ON “Find My iPhone.” That’s what finally fixed it for me.

Your Cydia purchases are intact! All you have to do after you jailbreak your iOS device again is log into Cydia, download and install the app that wasn’t backed up, and re-register it. It should remember your registration number. It did for my iPhone anyway. I just downloaded the Cydia app that I had bought before, opened it, clicked on “Register,” and on the page it brought up, my registration number was already filled in. I just had to click “Activate” and I was good to go! Pretty cool.

Even if you get another iPhone/iPad (upgrade to the latest version, for example), Cydia apparently transfers your purchase history to your new device. I haven’t tried that yet, but that’s what they said on HowardForums.com, one of the most well-known and respected cell phone forums on the net.

Just to be clear, though, unless you backed up your Cydia apps BEFORE you did the jailbreak (in which case you wouldn’t have a need to read this), then all of your inputted data in the app will be lost, as well as the settings. But that’s to be expected, right, since you’re downloading the latest version of the app directly from Cydia? But at least you didn’t have to buy it again!

If you want to backup your apps before you upgrade to the latest iOS, then you can do it with a free app called AptBackup that you can download from Cydia. But just know that it only backs up the LIST of apps that you downloaded, not the actual apps themselves or the app settings.

PLEASE NOTE that it does say in the instructions (see below) that you first have to “restore your iPhone and restore your backup in iTunes“, which I do NOT recommend doing. When I restored my iPhone from a backup, my battery drained crazy fast! I did a ton of research (which I will be posting soon), and found out that the reason why my battery was draining so fast was that I had restored it from a previous backup. You must set it up as a NEW PHONE if you don’t want that to happen, which means you will NOT be restoring from a backup. So this app would not work for how I suggest upgrading your iOS device based on my experience, unfortunately.

First, there is no way to tell the difference just by looking at it. You have to either have the phone in your hand, or have to have the serial number.

If you have the phone in your hand, then check the following items:

Go into the Camera and see if there is a slider to toggle between photo and video in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Check and see if it has the Compass app

Hold down the Home button (the round button on the front of the phone) and see if “Voice Control” comes up

If the iPhone that you’re checking has the above apps/features, then it is an iPhone 3GS. If it doesn’t, then it is a 3G.

Another way to tell without having to have the physical phone is by entering the serial number of the phone into the following web page:

https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

It will tell you which iPhone you have. To find out what the serial number is of the iPhone, tell whoever has it to go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>ABOUT>Scroll down the page and look for SERIAL NUMBER.

Enjoy!

But I did some research and found that one of the causes was a bad charger. Now a charger can be bad a few ways:

It can be bad out of the box

It can say that it was made for the iPhone, but it is not a quality charger

It can go bad after a couple months of use

It can be a setup that does not work well, even though you think it would (this was the cause of my problem)

The setup that I had was a genuine iPhone home charger plugged into a power inverter. If you’re not sure what a power inverter is, it’s a device that plugs into the cigarette lighter in your car and allows you to plug regular plugs that go into the wall socket in your home into it. I’ve used that setup in the past and had no issues. But for whatever reason, it started to give me issues. It would cause my iPhone to act really crazy. Here are some of the things that it did:

It would act really jumpy when it was plugged in (it would not be a smooth scroll)

It would act jumpy after it had been plugged in, and was no longer plugged in

When I touched the screen and selected something, it would randomly select something else

When I started typing, the cursor would jump to another field in the screen or another section of the text and continue typing there

Once I restarted the phone a couple of times and charged it with a genuine charger, it started working normally again.

Enjoy!

Do you want to know why? Then watch the video below, because not only do I explain why, but I walk you through the process, step by step, of how to set it up so you WILL get instant notification of your Gmail email on your iPhone or iPod Touch, just like your Blackberry buddies.

Click here to view the embedded video.

And if you don’t have time to watch the above video, or you don’t need the visuals, then simply follow the instructions below on how to set your Gmail email as PUSH email on your iPhone or iPod Touch:

Go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>Click on “Fetch New Data”>Make sure PUSH is ON

2. Click Add Account>Microsoft Exchange

3. Type in your Gmail email address where it says, “Email”

4. Leave “Domain” blank

5. Enter your Gmail email address for your “Username”

6. Enter your Gmail password

7. Under “Description”, change it to your Gmail email address

8. Click NEXT, and it will verify the settings you just typed in

9. After it verifies your info, under “Server,” enter “m.google.com” (no quotes)

10. Click NEXT, and it will verify the server

11. Choose which info from your Gmail and Google account you want to sync
WARNING: When you select to have your Gmail CONTACTS be synced, it will ask you if you want to delete your iPhone contacts and replace them with your Gmail contacts. I’m not sure if you can merge them, so if you don’t have the contacts that are already on your iPhone in your Gmail contacts, then do NOT select to sync your Gmail contacts with your iPhone.

Click on the account again to confirm settings, and to set the “Mail Days to Sync” to the desired time period
NOTE: If you want to have ALL of your email available on your phone, including from years ago or for years in the future, then select “Unlimited.” If not, then select the time period that suits you.

You also get some other benefits of setting up your Gmail email this way, aside from instant notification.

One benefit is that any email that you send with your iPhone, you will see as “Sent” email on gmail.com, and on any computer of yours where you have your Gmail account set up in the IMAP format. Same goes for messages that you read on your iPhone. They will show up as already have been read on gmail.com and your other computers where your Gmail account is setup in IMAP format, and vice versa.

Another reason is that not only can you sync your Gmail email with your iPhone or iPod Touch, but you can sync your Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar with it as well, and any changes to your Gmail contacts or Google calendar will instantly show up on all devices that are syncing with it. So if you add a person to your contacts on gmail.com, then it will instantly show up on your iPhone (if you have it set up to sync your Gmail contacts with your iPhone), and vice versa. Pretty cool.

If you have some questions about this, either comment below or watch the video, because in the video I answer some frequently asked questions about doing this.

Enjoy!

It was a brilliant blog post about how you can listen to and comprehend any audio program very easily at double the speed. I found this very intriguing because I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and would love to double the amount of audiobooks that I listen to in the same amount of time, thereby doubling the amount of books that I “read.”

So, I gave it a try and LOVED it. Not because I loved the sound of it, but because I could take in the same amount of information in HALF the time! I’m all about being efficient and productive, and this little trick does just that.

Now when listening to audiobooks or podcasts on the iPhone or iPod Touch, all you have to do is hit the playback speed icon in the top right section of the screen as you are looking at the track that you are playing. It’s right under the progress bar.

See…

(Btw, The New Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz is a GREAT book/audiobook on psychology. I highly recommend you check it out. No matter what level you are at in your life, it will help you get to the next level, because your income is based on your self-image, not on your talent or skill.)

Each time you tap that icon, it will change the playback speed from 1/2 speed, to 1X speed (normal speed), to 2X speed (double speed).

But, what if you have an audiobook in mp3 format, or what if you want to listen to a song at a quicker or slower speed? There’s no icon for adjusting the playback speed when you’re just playing music. The playback speed icon above turns into the SHUFFLE icon (kind of looks like a figure eight turned sideways with arrows), which will play the songs in random order.

So, we have to be a bit creative with mp3 files. Don’t worry. It’s a very simple process.

In iTunes on your computer, RIGHT-click on the track you want to listen to at a different playback speed

Select GET INFO

Click on the OPTIONS tab

Under MEDIA KIND, select either PODCAST or AUDIOBOOK

Click OK

If you want to listen to more than one track at a different speed, like with an audiobook, then do that for each track.

Now we’re not done just yet, because when you do this, that track or those tracks that you just did the above procedure to will no longer appear in the music section or in the Playlist section (if you did the above procedure to an entire playlist) on your iPod Touch or iPhone. It will appear in the Podcast or Audiobook section. But NOT right away. You’ll need to go back to iTunes on your computer and select that new podcast or audiobook as one that you want imported onto your iPhone or iPod. It will be as if you are selecting it for the first time.

Here’s how to do that:

While your iPod Touch or iPhone is plugged into your computer, open iTunes

Click on your iPod Touch or iPhone on the left side, above where all of your playlists are located

Let it sync with iTunes if it is set to automatically sync whenever you connect it

Click on the Podcasts or Books tab (whichever one you chose in the above procedure; if you chose Audiobook, then click on the Books tab and scroll down for the Audiobooks)

Put a checkmark next to the new “Podcast” or “Audiobook” that you just created

Click the Apply button (in the bottom right corner of iTunes)

Let iTunes sync with your iPod Touch or iPhone again

Eject your iPhone or iPod Touch from iTunes by hitting the eject button on the left side of iTunes, to the right of your device

Open the iPod app, go into Audiobooks or Podcasts and play your newly created file(s)

Click on the playback speed icon and start listening to things in half the time! (or double the time, if that’s your thing)

It should look like so…

(Btw, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy is also a powerful book/audiobook that teaches you how to program your subconscious mind. And since 95% of our behavior is dictated by our subconscious mind, this book can be life changing.)

That’s it! Now you will be able to blow through audiobooks like no tomorrow and double your rate of learning instantly! Pretty cool, huh? Or for those of you who are musicians, you will be able to play the music back at a slower speed so you can learn it easier.

Enjoy!

And if you don’t have an iPod yet and want one, then I suggest you check out my blog post on the latest products from Apple, which includes the latest lineup of iPods. I don’t think the new iPod Shuffle will do this, and the new iPod Nano might do it, but the new iPod Touch and iPhone definitely do it.
