How to Send a Text Message to a Cell Phone From Your Computer For FREE

Have you ever been in the situation where you want to send someone a text message, but don’t have a cell phone on hand? Well here’s how to do it, easily:

The first way to send a text message to a cell phone from your computer is go the carrier’s website and look for a tool that most carriers have on their website that allows you to send a text message to one of their subscribers.

If you are not sure what carrier the number you want to text to is on, then just to here and enter it:

You do not need to sign up for the alerts to get the carrier. After you first submit the number, it will ask you to agree to their TOA (Terms of Agreement). On that same page, it will tell you what carrier that phone number is on.

Or you can also try this one:

http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco

But that one is not as accurate as the first one that I mentioned, as it only asks for the area code and the prefix. So it is not checking the exact number. I actually tried some area codes and prefixes, and at least one was not accurate.

The second way, which is easier and quicker, is to simply send them an email. All you have to do is look at the list below of 106 providers, delete the user name of the email address that corresponds with the carrier that the person who you are sending a text message to has, and replace it with their phone number.

So, for example, if I wanted to send a friend a text message from my computer, and my friend has Verizon as their carrier, then I would do this:

Friend’s cell number who has Verizon as their carrier: (555) 123-1212
Default Verizon Email for texting to Verizon numbers: number@vtext.com
Email address that I’ll use to send a text message to my friend: 5551231212@vtext.com

Take note of the amount of characters you are able to put in your text message. The amount of characters allowed by each carrier is noted in the list below. If you don’t want to count them yourself, then copy and paste what you want to write into a blank MS Word document, and then go to TOOLS>WORD COUNT. The number that you want to look at is the one that is labeled, “characters with spaces”.

Is your iPhone no longer saving your photos? Do you think you lost them forever? I thought the same thing. But it’s not true. It IS saving them, just not in the same location. At least that was the case for me.

Here’s what I did to get my pics and vids back.

Apparently I had installed an app that changed my settings, and it changed my settings so that my iPhone 3GS was no longer saving the photos in the Camera Roll album in my Photos. I tried using the Image Capture app on my Mac to access the lost pictures and videos, but that did not work. That’s because it only looks in the default folder for the pics.

So what did I do to get access to my lost pictures and videos on my iPhone? iPhoto, baby! I just hooked up my iPhone to my Mac, launched iPhoto, clicked on the icon for my iPhone in iPhoto, and voila! There were all of my lost pics and vids! I was very happy about that.

To fix the issue, I just have to find the app that changed the settings and uninstall it. The I’ll use the app SBSettings in Cydia to change the settings back. Your iPhone needs to be jailbroken to do this. Good thing jailbreaking is legal now! I used SBSettings to fix it once, but whatever app is installed that changed it changed it right back after I fixed it. So now I just have to find that crazy app and kill/delete it. I’ll do another post on how I fixed it once I find that pesky app and ban it from my phone!

How to Increase Your iPhone Battery Life for Playing Your Videos

OK. Here’s an iPhone tip for you. This should work for all iPhones. It’s a tip that will help you to play your videos for a LOT longer time period before the battery dies…up to 3 to 4 TIMES longer! Crazy, huh?

What’s the secret? How do you do it? Easy…

All you have to do is just play the audio of the video, and not the video of the video, if that makes sense.

So if you don’t have a need to actually watch the video, and you can just listen to it (like while you’re working out or in the car for example), then this tip is PERFECT for you!

Here’s how to do it:

1. Go into videos (or playlist if you have a video playlist)
2. Start playing a video
3. Hit the sleep/wake/power button (the button on the top of the iPhone)
4. The video will stop playing, and the screen will go off (sleep mode)
5. Press the home button twice quickly so you see the play button at the
top of the screen
6. Hit the play button
7. If you are playing a video playlist and are moving around (like working
out), then hit the wake/sleep/power key right after you start playing the
video so that it won’t skip to the next song when you move the iPhone.
8. ENJOY!

How to Fix the White Screen of Death on the iPhone

I don’t what it is about my iPhone these days. Maybe my iPhone knows that I’m thinking about getting the iPhone 4G when it comes out. Doesn’t it know that I’ll find a good home for it? Anyway, a day or two ago, I got the white screen of death. The whole screen was white and I couldn’t do anything with it. I did some quick research, and found that all you have to do is a soft reset.

Here’s how:

1. Hold down the home button (the round button on the face of the phone) and the power button (AKA sleep/wake button) on top of the phone for 6 to 8 seconds. You will then see the Apple logo. It will stay on the apple logo for a while (a few minutes, at least it did in my case), and then it will go to the home screen and you’ll be good to go!

NOTE: After I fixed it, I did some more research and one guy said you first have to hold down the home button and the volume up botton, and then hold down the home button and the power button. But I didn’t have to do this. Some of you might though, so I figured I would mention it.

I had posted a fix to an issue that I was having with my iPhone 3GS (it was randomly shutting off) that I thought I had taken care of, however, just this morning, when the battery had about 70% power, it just died, and I couldn’t revive it.. The last app that I was using before it died was the Photo app. The reason I mention that is that when I was doing my research on this, I read on a forum that the last thing that another person was doing before it just shut off was emailing a photo from the Photo app. It could be a coincidence, but I just figured I would mention it.

So, I did some more research and found a fix!

It’s a pretty bizarre fix. I hope it fixed it for good, but I don’t see how it would. All you have to do is toggle (move back and forth) the switch that puts the iPhone in vibrate mode so it doesn’t ring (the switch above the volume switch). Toggle it twice. Then hold the home button (the round and only button on the face of the phone) and the power button for 6 – 8 seconds, and then let go. Once you let go, the apple logo will appear, and eventually it will bring up the main screen.

Once I got back on, the Internet was no longer working. I called my provider and they walked me through entering the settings again (they had been wiped out for whatever reason). The phone function was still working, though. I just had to go into SETTINGS>GENERAL>NETWORK>Turn on data roaming>click on CELLULAR NETWORK and enter the APN for my provider. That’s all I had to do and I was good to go! I’ll keep you updated if anything else happens.

Why My iPhone 3GS kept Shutting Off Unexpectedly and How I Fixed It

Recently, my iPhone 3GS kept on shutting off out of the blue, and did so on a pretty regular basis. However, I only let this happen for a day or so before I took action, did research, and fixed it. I can not let anything happen to my beloved iPhone. It’s in integral part of my businesses.

Here is what happened and how I fixed it:

My iPhone 3GS was acting crazy saying there was 37% of the battery power left, then 5%, then 17%, and then it would shut off. It kept on doing this. To get it to turn back on, I would have to wait a few minutes, plug it in, and then it would come back. It was acting as if it didn’t remember how much of the battery was left. Never had that happened before, and I have had it for about 1 year.

At first I thought it was the battery, but decided to do more research. I did some research online and talked to some guys at Fry’s. Some people online said it might be because it got wet or that it just needed to be re-jailbroken. The guy at Fry’s suggested that I re-jailbreak it. I didn’t really care to do that, as I am running 3.0.1, and did not want to go through the hassle of finding the new jailbreak for the latest version of the OS. Plus, I either want to wait for OS 4.0 to come out (hopefully June 7 at WWDC) and jailbreak that when it comes out, or if Steve Jobs rocks our world and releases the iPhone 4G at WWDC, then I’ll buy that.

I decided to try some other things first, as this problem did not happen gradually. It happened suddenly. So I figured it was probably something that I did.

So, I tried a couple of things.

1. I deleted the most recent app that I installed (it was a free alarm app that is in the top 50 free apps in iTunes)
2. I copied all of the pics and videos that I had in my Camera Roll in my Photos app onto an external hard drive and deleted them from my iPhone (there were over 1300 pics and videos, which totalled up to about 1GB of data).

Since I did both of the above actions, the issue is resolved. I’m not sure which action fixed it. Maybe it was a combo of the two, but I had just installed the alarm app (even though I already had a different one already installed), and that’s pretty much when things started going crazy.

With regard to how much space I had available on the hard drive of my iPhone before and after, before I took the above actions, I had a little over 1Gb of hard drive space left, and after, I now have 2.3GB of space left, and I have a 16GB version.

So that’s it. That’s how I fixed it. I’m surprised that fixed it, as I really did think the battery was going.

I just had this happen to me. I was in the gym, and for some reason, the volume all of sudden went down to zero. I tried different apps, but no matter what I did, when I ramped up the volume, it just went right back to zero.

It was an easy fix…

All I had to do was to perform a soft reset and I was good to go. To perform a soft reset, all you have to do is hold down the home button (the only button on the face of the iPhone) as you start up the iPhone. Once you see the apple logo, you can let go. Gotta love how the iPhone is so easy to fix!

How to make your WordPress blog iPhone compatible in just a few, quick and easy clicks!

I just found out how to make any self-hosted WordPress blog iPhone compatible. Now of course, you can view any website on the internet, but I’m talking about a format that is especially made for the iPhone, so that your blog is very easy to navigate when using the iPhone, and you don’t have to zoom in, zoom out, etc.

Here’s how to do it:

If you have a recent version of WordPress…

1. Log into your Admin area
2. Click on “Plugins” on the left
3. At the top of the page, click on the “Add new” button next to “Manage Plugins”
4. In the search field, type in “WPTouch iPhone Theme” and click the “Search Plugins” button
5. In the search results, click on the “Install” text link all the way to the right in the row for the “WPTouch iPhone Theme” plugin
6. After it is installed, click “Activate”. If you don’t see the link to activate it, then click on “Plugins” on the left, scroll down the Plugins page, and click on the “Activate” text link next to the listing for the “WPTouch iPhone Theme” plugin
7. Done!

If you don’t have a recent version of WordPress for your self-hosted blog (I highly suggest you update it so that you always have the latest version), then go here to download the “WPTouch iPhone Theme” plugin, and read the instructions on how to manually install it. It’s pretty easy to do. All you have to know pretty much is how to FTP a file or folder.

After you’re done, it should look like this:

A FREE GPS Navigation App for the iPhone with Turn-by-Turn Voice Instructions

I just came across a blog post that gives a blog by blow review of 6 of the most popular GPS navigation apps for the iPhone. You know, the apps that give you turn by turn directions on how to get to your destination. While reading it, I found out about a free GPS navigation app for the iPhone that gives turn-by-turn voice instructions! Very cool, huh?

I know, yes, there is a Maps app on the iPhone, but does it talk to you as you drive like a normal GPS navigation system should? Don’t think so. Does it give you Points of Interest? Sure, if you type in the name of the business or the type of business, but not with the click of a button. Does it play music? No siree, bob. Does it allow for multi-point trips, display speed limits, speak the name of the street that it is referring to? That would be no, no, and no.

Well, the free app that I am going to tell you about in a second or two may not have all of those features either, but it does talk to you, giving you instructions as you drive, and it does act just like a GPS navigation software should. It even allows you to access your account online so you can plan your trip online with your computer at home, save your trip, and then access it via your iPhone in the car. Pretty handy when you don’t want to have to plug in a route while en route to your destination or while in a hurry.

What’s the free app, you say? Well, it’s Mapquest 4 Mobile.

Good old Mapquest. I played around with it a little bit, and it seems great. Although I have not driven with it yet. I’ll give you an update once I do.

How to get your pictures and videos off your iPhone onto your computer (Mac)

You’ll enjoy this one, because it’s super easy. No more having to email your iPhone pics and videos to yourself to enjoy them on your computer. All you have to do is the following:

1. Plug your iPhone into your computer like you always do when you want to put music on it or Sync it with your computer (just plug it in via USB)

2. Go into your Applications and DOUBLE-click on IMAGE CAPTURE

3. Click on your iPhone in IMAGE CAPTURE, which should be listed on the left hand side of the IMAGE CAPTURE program window (it will be named your name, or whatever you named it)

4. You will now see all of your pics and videos listed on the right hand side

5. If you only want to import some of them, then choose the ones you want by holding down the COMMAND key (the open apple key to the left of your keyboard) and selecting the pics and videos that you want (skip this step if you want to import all of the pics and videos)

6. Choose where you would like to import them to by clicking on the menu next to “IMPORT TO” at the bottom of the program window (choosing iPhoto is recommended)

7. Now either choose IMPORT if you selected certain pics and vids in STEP 5, or choose IMPORT ALL if you want all of your pictures and videos imported into iPhoto

6. Enjoy!

Yes, iPhoto can handle videos. And if you want to import the videos that you have in iPhoto into iMovie so you can edit them, after you import them into iPhoto, simply open iMovie and it will automatically ask you if you want to import your videos in iPhoto (or it might just ask if you want to create thumbnails for those videos, which is the same thing; it will still import them into iMovie).
